It was a lovely day at the National Equestrian Centre at McLeans Island, Christchurch, for the first day of the Canterbury Dressage Championship. Entries unfortunately were not as good as previous years, mainly because the large contingent of dressage enthusiasts in Marlborough who usually come down didn’t make the trip this year, due to the road closures after the Kaikoura and North Canterbury earthquakes.
The standard was still very good, however. Barbara Chalmers made the six-hour trip from her Otago home, and took out the Level 7 FEI Int I Custom Logistics Super 5 class on Rossellini. “She got distracted part way through, she started off well and I was pleased with her.” Barbara, who used to compete in show jumping, said she now focuses on dressage and her 14-year-old mare is obviously a big family favourite. “I would build another bedroom on our house and put her in it but don’t think my husband would be so keen. She hasn’t had a hard life, I wanted something to ride into my sixties, something that wasn’t humungous and had a good temperament. She was super-hot when she was young, it was zero to 200kph in the blink of an eye, but she has learned her trade now. I just took my time with her.”
Amelia French and Wolkenblaz were runners-up with a score of 63.454.
Joy White was third in the same class on Gammon Ks, and was pleased with her lovely horse. “His extensions were good, he had heaps of power but he is green at this level. He missed a lot of work last year, so it is good to have him out again.”
The competition continues tomorrow.
