Waikato Hunt opening

Waikato Hunt opened with a terrific turnout in the build-up to its 125th jubilee celebrations

WAIKATO OPENING MARCH16 b-69It’s a very special year for Waikato Hunt, as it gears up to celebrate an impressive 125-year jubilee from April 24-30.

Master Grant McGregor says there is a great week lined up, and the Hunt is looking forward to hosting hunting fans from all over for great hunting, food and camaraderie over some of the best farmland in the country.

The programme kicks off with an opening ceremony on April 24 at the historical Waikato Hunt Kennels near Cambridge, complete with mayoral welcome and the launch of the 125th anniversary book, A Right Royal Run, the Next 25 Years.

Hunting starts the next day at Wharepuhunga, with a midday ride off after the Last Post and a minute’s silence to commemorate Anzac Day.

Mid-week sees the National Hound Show, to be held at Mystery Creek, where hounds from every Hunt in New Zealand will be paraded in front of the director of harrier hounds for the UK, Lizzie Pinney. The Bayleys Inter-Hunt Teams Challenge will take place after the hound show, followed by music and entertainment.

There are three more hunts planned for the week, plus the Hunt Ball at Mystery Creek Events Centre on April 29.
