We found these photos in our archives and just had to bring them back to the light of day. We think this is the near-miss to beat all other near-misses. Bryce Newman is one of our most experienced riders, having ridden at all levels, and is a bit of a master at producing horses from scratch. Bryce’s near-miss from Taupo Three-day-event in 2007 is perhaps the best save in history. Riding Bates Our Questionnaire, Bryce went on to finish third in the CCI3* and helped the New Zealand Trans-Tasman team win the trophy. All photos are taken by Roz Neave.
Photo 1, the classic case of “leaving a leg”Photo 2. Landing gear in all the wrong places at this pointPhoto 3. Bryce must be thinking he is going to be hitting the deck any secondPhoto 4. Bates Our Questionnaire made a remarkable recovery, a very athletic horse, but it’s still not looking good for BrycePhoto 5. Love the reaction from the spectators – is that Sam Taylor about to come to Bryce’s aid?Photo 6. Surely he is a gone-burger?Photo 7. Hang on Bryce, but surely there is no return from this position?Photo 8. Incredible leg-flicking action going on, what great core strength he must havePhoto 9. He’s got the leg back over, and Bates Our Questionnaire is helping by not dropping his head or doing anything which would make his rider’s situation even worsePhoto 10. As the horse turns, Roz Neave’s camera is in just the right place and we see Bryce’s Spiderman impersonations up closePhoto 11. Nearly back in the right place!Photo 12. Lovely Questy doing everything he can to help his riderPhoto 13. We think Bryce may be wondering which way he should be going, or which way is up. Bates Our Questionnaire looks like he is just waiting to be pointed in the right direction!Photo 14. And they are off again, much to the delight of the spectators!
