A great day’s show jumping at the National Equestrian Centre, McLeans Island, Christchurch for the Canterbury Show Jumping Championships.
One of the highlights was the last event, the trans-Tasman competition between the team of young riders from Victoria against the young rider team from Canterbury. After a great start with the national anthems being played (horse riders don’t sing, apparently), the teams got down to the all-important coin-toss and New Zealand started on their winning way, sending Australia in to bat first. All riders were on borrowed horses and jumped 1.10-1.20m.
Darcy Wade was first to go, but he and Domani (owned by Jordan Lloyd) didn’t seem to click and soon parted ways. Lucy Askin had the dream ride of Tribute OL (owned by Katie O’Neil) and notched up New Zealand’s first clear round. Binni Greig had drawn the talented grey Winterberg (owned by the Ice-cream Lovers syndicate) but had a few sticky moments, to notch up quite a few faults. Kimberley Bird rode Danni Gubb’s Norfolk Rubicon well and had just one rail.
The last two Aussies had a better time than their team-mates, wth Joel Pearce on Astek Reformer going clear, and Max Height on Hammertime taking a single rail. New Zealand retaliated with another two clears to Kimberley Bird on Albert (owned by Bridget O’Sullivan) and Steffi Whittaker on Glenmark (owned by Amanda Brown and Steve Montgomery).
The second round produced even better jumping, with New Zealand chalking up another three clears to take out the first leg of the competition. Each clear round also earned bonus points.
The second stage will be held on Sunday morning, with New Zealand on 7 points (5 for the win and 2 bonus points for the clear rounds), and Australia on 3. Horses are swapped for tomorrow’s competition, so it will be an interesting conclusion!
Other highlights of the day included two good wins to Todd Magner and his superstar Awatuna Jonesy. The pair won both the University Jumping series (run in conjunction with the Horse TAM5 over 1.20 metres, which Todd won too) as well as the Betavet YR class (as part of the FMG series). Todd intends to head to Horse of the Year next, aiming to do well in the University series class, the Young Rider and perhaps the speed class.
The Dunstan Horse Feeds & Equifibre in conjunction with TMS Pro-Am was won by Mary Wakeman on MJ Lubeck who produced the only clear round in the jump off.
The Amateur Rider was again a great competition (sponsored by Caledonian Holdings in conjunction with Hazlett Rural) with Candace Kingsbury and Miss Serendipity II winning, and, right behind them on time, Carissa McGregor and Blytheburn Coruba in second place.
There was a good field in the Open Horse 1.05m show hunter class. The Adrienne Cromie Cup was up for grabs, sponsored by Barrett Contractors Ltd, and this is a lovely way to remember Adrienne, who was a very regular competitor (and winner) of show hunter classes. This year’s winners were Sophie Scott and Benrose Rockstar.
