Six of the best

Logan Massie is no stranger to Horse of the Year titles, having won the Pony, Junior and Young Rider crowns. But he says the last two HOYs have been slim pickings, so he was thrilled to win the Pryde’s EasiFeed 6YO title today with Double J Kelvin, the latest superstar to emerge from the Hawke’s Bay’s Double J Stud.

It was the first of the always-competitive age-group titles to be decided at the 2019 Land Rover Horse of the Year Show, and 13 combinations made it through to the jump-off.

Logan and Kelvin were second last to go, and clearly were on a mission, nailing the win with a clear in a time nearly three seconds faster than the second placegetter. It was a popular win, with rowdy support from the sidelines, and the victory was even sweeter given that the Massie family bred the horse, who is by Double J Repicharge and out of JK Madam Seattle.

“He’s a super-rideable horse, he’s athletic, and will be well suited to sell overseas. I just hope I can keep him for another 12 months,” Logan says.

He and the 162cm Kelvin have had some great results to their names recently, including sixth in the 6YO tour at Takapoto, and winning the 6YO class at Taranaki’s Grand Prix show in January.

Vicki Wilson on her impressive young stallion Daminos TWS put in a thrilling performance to finish in third place with a clear jump-off.
