Harry could open a cover shop!

Victorian and South Island Young Rider teams

The South Island show jumping and show hunter championships concluded today with some great displays of jumping on a very sunny Sunday afternoon.

Harry Feast certainly relished the conditions with his team, winning more rugs in the two days than many people have won in their careers!

Harry finished off his day with the only double clear on Double J Bouncer to win the Dustan Horse Feeds in conjunction with the Kinlock Farms horse Grand Prix (1.40 – 1.50).  It certainly made up for a disappointing performance last weekend at the NRM National Show Jumping Championships, where Double J Bouncer struggled in the wet and muddy conditions.  Today was a different story, with the horse relishing the firm ground, and making a huge effort over the John Vallance designed course.  “He’s not a big horse, he doesn’t have the biggest stride, but he tries so hard!”  You could hear the effort the horse put in as he went around, with a number of loud grunts required to get over some of the bigger fences!  “He is a grunter, but he only does it when the jumps get bigger!”

Harry and Double J Bouncer over the last – both giving maximum effort!

As well as the first prize for today’s GP class, Harry also won the Jagermeister Trophy for the Canterbury series, and another cover for the South Island Series which hasn’t finished yet, but no-one can beat Harry so he was awarded the prize and cover today.

Harry won the Gentleman rider points prize, as well as the Jagermeister trophy for the GP series in Canterbury, presented by Sarah Power

Harry is heading to the Horse of the Year show, and is still deciding whether he will compete in Blenheim next weekend on the way, or go straight up to Hastings.  He also hasn’t decided whether he will compete in the Olympic Cup yet, he has an entry in the 1.40m class, the Norwood Gold Cup and the Olympic Cup but will make the decision on exactly which classes he will go in once he is there.

Another of Harry’s team firing this weekend was Double J Bouncer’s younger brother, Double J Barman who is also by Repicharge out of Backchat.  Today Harry won the South Island six-year-old series on the lovely young horse, who looks as promising as his older brother. Harry earned another rug for that and finished second in today’s class, with Georgina Dormer and Casanova NZPH taking the win.

Trans Tasman Young Rider teams

The South Island young rider team came into today’s round of the Trans-Tasman team competition in front of the Victorian team, having jumped some good rounds yesterday to earn bonus points for having three clear rounds in each of yesterday’s two-round competition.  Those bonus points were going to prove invaluable, as the Australian team won today’s two-round competition, earning five points, with the Kiwis earning another 3.  The Kiwis therefore finished on 10 points and the Victorians on 8.

Lucinda Askin, rode brilliantly in the trans-Tasman test, four clear rounds, pictured here on Winterberg

The teams changed horses from yesterday, and there were mixed results with some horses who didn’t go so well going better today, and the reverse as well.

Lucinda Askin completed another two clear rounds to add to her two clear rounds from yesterday.  Today she rode Winterberg and the pair looked very accomplished.  One of the best performing horses was Tribute OL who had two clears yesterday (when ridden by Lucinda). Today the mare, owned by Katie O’Neill, put in another two clear rounds, this time ridden by Australian Binni Greig.

Victorian Young RIder team – disappointed to be given a red ribbon today as in Victoria red ribbons are for second place! Blues are first.

Brooke Dobbin, the coach of the Victorian team, was having his first visit to the South Island, although he has been in New Zealand before, including having finished second (to Katie Laurie and Dunstan Springfield) in the Olympic Cup at the Horse of the Year in 2014!

“The hospitality has been great, we have really enjoyed our short trip,” he said afterwards. “This has been an amazing opportunity.  It has given the young riders the opportunity to experience being part of a team in this environment.  New Zealand always puts on great competitions but we look forward to seeing how the Young Rider team goes when they come back to compete in Australia next year.”

Kimberley Bird, the captain of the South Island team said their tactics were simple – don’t knock any rails down!  “We tried to ride the horses in the way they wanted to be ridden, and didn’t try to change them!”

Pony Grand Prix

Grace Manera, Tallyho Scoundrel, winners of the Saddlery Barn Pony Grand Prix as part of the Country TV series

Grace Manera and Tallyho Scoundrel won the Country TV Pony Grand Prix, sponsored by Saddlery Barn.  “He jumped really great,” she said afterwards.  They are heading to the Horse of the Year and hope to do well in the Pony of the Year competition.

The event was also the concluding event in the Canterbury Series and Rosa Buist-Brown was the winner of the series on Junior Disco, and therefore was the first winner of the Moonlight Glow Cup which the Blackmore / Whittaker family have presented.  Rosa is another heading to Hastings to contest the Pony of the Year competition.
