Saba Sam first round

Can last year's winners, Wellington Horowhenua, defend their title? A great start in the first round.

Charlotte Amos on Captain Nemo, jumped well and fast!

UPDATE: Due to the cancellation of the second round, the Saba Sam Shield has been retained by the Wellington Horowhenua team, who led after the first round. Well done team!

The first round of this teams event was held today, as part of the Pony 1.20m class.

Donated by Graeme Hansen, who owned and rode the unforgettable Saba Sam, the shield has a proud history, being first competed for in 1971. Last year’s winners were Wellington Horowhenua, and they have a good grasp on victory again this year, leading after today’s first round with just four faults.

Taranaki riders also had a good day, finishing on a total of eight, the same as the team from Northland. Auckland are on 12, Central Districts 30, and Hawke’s Bay 32. The second round will be held in the main arena on Sunday morning.

Team support

Ten combinations came back for the jump-off and competition was hot from the very first pair, Sophie Scott and Benrose Playtime, who were clear in 37.04. Charlotte Amos and Captain Nemo showed they were really out to win, also jumping clear in a great time of 34.96. This was not beaten, although Billy Menso and Taylor Made Gift gave it a great shot (36.01). Parys Marshall and Spot You Later also put in their best effort, clear in 36.86, which was good enough for third, with Sophie having to settle for fourth.

The prize-giving with Charlotte getting her first ribbon

Charlotte, who hails from Cambridge, was second in the horse 1.20m class, so obviously enjoys this height! Captain Nemo is entered in the Pony of the Year competition, and Charlotte is looking forward to it. “Hopefully we qualify,” she was quick to add. But she has a plan B, which is the Speed Pony 1.20 class – and on today’s performance, she looks good whichever plan it ends up being.
