A very hot weekend in Auckland saw lots of riders trying their luck in the Hunua Pony Club one-day event, held at Titch Massey and Angela Lloyd’s picturesque Springbush venue.
The ground was perfect, with good grass cover despite the drought conditions, and the event was very well run by a small army of volunteers from what is a very small pony club! There were many top-level combinations having a low-key run, and it was wonderful to see Donna Edwards-Smith giving DSE Tangolooma his first start back after a very long injury break. Donna cantered him around the cross-country very slowly, incurring a stack of time faults, but clear jumping.
Other two- and three-star combinations competing hors concours (ie. competing but not eligible for a prize) included Stephanie Vervoort and X Factor, Diane Gilder on Your Attorney, Danielle Wheeler and One Cool Dude, Cherie Jaques and Tobinator, and Christian Lane and Kinnordy Gallilee.
It was also great to see riders like Fiona Fraser and Susannah Hardie making a return to eventing after a gap of some years. While they may not have gone home with a ribbon, we hope to see them out again soon!
There were also some well-known international horses in action, including the much-admired Quimbo, with Charlotte Sellar, who were in the 105 class.
Some exciting new combinations made an appearance, including Dannie Lodder with Alan and Heather Cato’s Amazing Spy. Dannie now has the ride on this talented NZ thoroughbred, who recently returned to New Zealand after being in the UK where he was ridden by Sir Mark Todd, Annabel Wigley and Victoria Leabeater.
Dannie’s daughter Scout had a good day, winning the NZPCA 105 class riding Pioneer Makokomiko. Cherie Jacques on Black Gem won the other division.
