Emily conquers Taranaki

Some superb jumping at the Taranaki Equestrian Jumping Premier Show

A well organised, action-packed show coupled with good weather added up to a lot of tired but smiling people at Taranaki.

Emily Hayward-Morgan, from Te Awamutu, had her team firing. She had a great show, winning not only the Country TV Premier League Horse Grand Prix, but also the FMG Young Rider, the Lincoln University Junior Rider and the East Coast Performance Horses Five-Year-Old Series.

Five horses went through to the jump-off in the Grand Prix and Brooke Edgecombe set the standard with a stunning clear round on LT Holst Andrea, impressing all the spectators.  Maurice Beatson, the perennial competitor, also jumped clear on Mandalay Cove but wasn’t able to shave the corners enough to beat Brooke; nor was Oliver Edgecombe able to catch his wife, despite Ultra Blue NZPH doing a good clear.  Sam Morrison and Biarritz put on another great display of jumping, clear and faster than Brooke, which meant Emily had to crank AP Ninja up if she wanted the win, and she certainly did just that. While she rattled a few, the poles stayed up and the time was fast, giving her the victory.

Emma Gaze from Ohaupo is another having a good streak at the moment, winning the Lets Bale Pro Am Series on Fire Bug and also finishing third on Woodlands Bay.

The talk of the show was Melody Matheson’s great win in the Cortaflex Seven-Year-Old Series with Graffiti MH. She absolutely nailed the jump-off, taking a line that no-one else even attempted. She cut inside a jump, galloped down to the wall on a huge angle, and successfully scorched around clear to win hands-down.

Competition was hot in the Pony Grand Prix’s with a classy field, but it was Masterton’s Georgia Percy who took the honours, riding Surprise Illusion.
