The North Island horse trials season kicked off early this year with the traditional Taupo Express Event being transformed into a full-format one-day event, held from 80cm to 1.05 levels, complete with prize money.
Happily for the riders, volunteers and officials, days of freezing cold southerly gales ceased at the perfect time, with a mild and sunny spring day making for perfect conditions.
Louise Mulholland got away to a great start in her campaign, taking out the open 1.05 class with her consistent Mr McTaggart, and also winning one of the 95cm divisions with Sandro’s Salute MW.
The restricted 1.05m classes were won by Cherie Jacques and Black Gem, and Su Jenkins and Anonymous.
Rosa Riger and Toa won the 95cm A-division, and Jen Buchanan and Zip It Up the B-division. The three 80cm classes were won by Lisa Brown and Mustangs Fire N Ice, Jeffery Amon and RM Limbo, and Grace Contessi and Sharvalley Music.
