Northerners light up South Island 3DE

A beautiful Canterbury day for the dressage, with North Islanders leading the way

The North Island contingent has made its presence felt on the dressage day at the South Island Three-Day Event in Christchurch.

Te Puke’s Abby Lawrence did a lovely test aboard Indy RE to lead the small but quality field in the Ultimate Design & Renovation Limited FEI CCI2* for 46.1 penalties. Brent Jury heads the southern charge in second position on SE Hedging with 50.1 penalties with Emily Cammock close in third on 51 penalties. Abby is also sitting fourth on her second ride Song, on 53.8 penalties.

Meanwhile, in the 17-strong CCI1*, Taupo’s Holly Morrell has the lead on Pampero but only just. It’s very tight at the top with less than two penalties separating the top eight riders going into tomorrow’s cross-country. Holly sits on 50.5 just 0.2pen ahead of Janelle Gibson from Gore on King Curtis, while Jessie Fitzjohn from Christchurch in third on 50.8.

Giles Gormack leads the  Mitavite FEI CIC3* on Lucero, but narrowly, from the only other competitior, Kate Flemming (Pauatahanui) on Mendelssohn.

Giles was the winner of the FEI CCI2* at the same event last year, and scored 63.5pen. He says he was “pleased with the test, despite a few tense moments.”  Giles has been out all week helping prepare the cross-country for the other classes and when we caught up with him, he was about to head out to walk the three-star course.

Earlier, in the first horse inspection, the Ground Jury made Giles and his connections a bit nervous for a while when they put Lucero in the hold box, but on getting checked out by the vet, and then trotting up again, the officials were happy for the pair to continue.

Competition across the lower levels was tight with some impressive performances on a lovely sunny day in Canterbury.

The all-important cross country phase gets underway tomorrow at 9am, followed by the final show jumping on Sunday. Entry to the grounds is free and all welcome.
