Lydia Truesdale and Allander Rocket on their way to a win in the CNC2* at Canterbury 2DE

Canterbury Eventing held its two-day event over the weekend, with the dressage and show jumping at McLeans Island. Sunday saw all competitors heading to the Mandeville Sports Ground, North Canterbury, where the cross-country was held.

This is developing into an excellent facility, and once again a good track was put up, with plenty of changes from last time the riders competed here. Nick Pyke and Richard Crowe were the official course builders, but we understand that there was a lot of input from Giles Cormack and Brent Jury as well as Larissa Srhoy. The team did a good job and the event was run very smoothly. Canterbury Eventing is another example of a great bunch of hardworking volunteers out providing some great competitions.

Courtney Davis is developing a good team, and gave them a great ride through the cross-country today, and was rewarded with two wins.  On By Hoki, Courtney won the CNC1*, and the horse looked like he was ready to step up again. She also won one of the CNC105 divisions on the promising Dunrobin Gancanagh, one to watch out for in the future.

Unfortunately quite a few of the riders in the CNC80 class ended up with the Big E beside their name as they insisted on jumping out of the water on the wrong side of the red flag. It certainly kept fence judge Corey Wood busy! Corey has recently moved up to the Canterbury region and it was so good to see him helping out with judging even though he was not riding.

There were plenty of pony club riders out getting some valuable practice before the Springston Trophy which is on soon, October 6-8, in Rakaia. Hopefully there will be no jumping on the wrong side of the red flag then!

Annabel Wardle, Twin Deserts – beautiful jump out of the water but on the wrong side of the flag! There were plenty who made this mistake.

The weather was perfect for most of the day but everyone watched as the storm rolled in from the south. The southern skies darkened and the temperature dropped, just as the last of the CNC80 class went. Unfortunately the rain came too, and then even some sleet and hail. Not the best for the last of the riders or to finish the weekend’s excellent competition.

Annabelle Jones and Braxton Boy won the CNC105 Division A at the Canterbury 2DE
