Good results from Kiwis in UK

There's been a lot happening in the UK eventing scene with our New Zealanders notching up some more great results.

While the Badminton win is fresh in our minds, it is back to work for Andrew Nicholson who took his younger horses to Rockingham Castle in the weekend. (Image: Stephen Bartholomew / Libby Law Photography)

Fresh from their successes at Badminton, Andrew and Tim both had wins at Rockingham Castle over the weekend. Andrew had a good win on the Libby Sellar-owned As Is in the CIC1* class, at their first attempt at this level. He was also tenth in the same class on Andrea BT4 (out of Nereo’s full sister).

You can catch up on a full interview with Andrew, including about his celebrations after Badminton, and Nereo’s little mate Smartie Dibben, thanks to An Eventful Life, on this link.

Tim won the Advanced Intermediate class on Cekatinka, finishing on his dressage score of 23.3! This mare is usually ridden by Jonelle, who of course isn’t competing as she is pregnant. Tim was also eighth in the same class on another of Jonelle’s mares, Ascona M, and fifth on Falcon IV in the Intermediate section, a class where Dan Jocelyn finished fourth on Fjury.

Jesse Campbell’s Fado was seventh in one Novice class, and Jess was also seventh in another division on Cosa Nostra and fifth in another on I Spye II.

Mark Todd was fourth in the CIC2* on Dusk Till Dawn. He has recently been advertising a couple of his horses to cut down on his team again – perhaps Sir Mark has the common tendency to just keep acquiring horses until it gets to the point where some have to go! Obos Colombus is one who is for sale and he finished 11th in the Advanced Intermediate yesterday; rails in the show jumping ruled him out of a better finish after a great dressage. You can check the advertisement out on this link – be warned, the price tag is £140,000.

James Avery had a good win in another CIC2* class on Zazu, a horse previously ridden by Jock Paget. James also had Optimus Prime II in that class, another NZ thoroughbred ridden by Jock. This horse was bought from Janine Hayde and formerly called Brentwood Tradition. The pair finished in 21st position. The next big event for James will be Tattersalls in Ireland.

Andrew was seventh in the same CIC2* on Yacabo BK and Sir Mark was 13th on McClaren.

Caroline Powell was also at Rockingham, and was seventh on Shannondale Inca in the BE100 and sixth in a Novice division on Halaraafa. Caroline has two horses entered in the four-star at Luhmuhlen in June, Sinatra Frank Baby and Spice Sensation, and she gave them both a run here, finishing seventh and tenth in the Open Intermediate, with another of her big team, On the Brash, eighth in that class.

As well as Caroline’s two entries in Luhmuhlen, New Zealand will be represented by Andrew Nicholson riding Teseo and Tim Rusbridge riding Oneforthenotebook.
