Easter Eventing

There was plenty of eventing all over the world at Easter, including in the North and South Islands, and our Kiwi riders competed with distinction at Burnham Market International Horse Trials in the UK.

South Island Three Day Event

It was a win to Emily Cammock and Shaw Lee in the Ultimate Design & Renovation’s CNC3* as part of the South Island event. Emily led after dressage but was overtaken by speedy Kirsty Sharapoff and Shoot the Breeze after the cross-country phase when she incurred 3.6 time penalties.

Kirsty was determined not to incur any time faults, and decided she would ride like she did at Taupo last year when she won the 2* class. “He just keeps going the whole time, he doesn’t pull and is very economical. He lands and turns, and is quick to listen.”

Unfortunately, she had two down in the show jumping today, to hand the lead back to Emily and Shaw Lee. Emily also had Lewis in the class, but elected to take him slowly during the jumping phases and incurred time faults in both, to finish third.

Kirsty is intending to head up to Central Districts with fellow Cantabrian Brent Jury, compete, leave the horse up there, return home and head back to Taupo to compete in the 3* class in May. In between times, school teacher Kirsty is spending her holidays clipping horses to pay for the trip!

Emily also had a win in the Rangiora Vet Centre CCN95 for four-, five- and six-year-old horses on her lovely Astek Vasili who also won the Young Event Horse class on Thursday.

Jessica Woods made her trip from the Waikato well worthwhile with her new horse, Just De Manzana (‘Lexi’) winning the Dunstan Feeds CCI2* and therefore the Mr Hagan Trophy (donated by the Srhoy family). Jessica had been sitting behind Corey Wood and Pick Up Line after both recorded clear-cross country phases within the time, but Corey’s four rails and six time faults in the show jumping left him in second place, with Maria van Kuijk and Antara Whiskey Mac third.

Jessica Woods, Just De Manzana, a new combination and looking good!

Jessica was really happy with her mare. “I was a little bit nervous due to not knowing her as much as I would like, but she looked after me, giving me the exact same ride as Too Predictable.” This is only the second 2* start for the new pair. “The big roll-top, I thought there was another stride but she said no. She took off and I thought, OK, I’ll just hold on.” On a combination later in the course, Just De Manzana also put in a big jump over the first corner. “I had to key-hole it, and came back on to the B element which was another corner. I initially was given 20 faults but luckily my partner had it on video and it was sorted out quickly.”

We hope you enjoy our gallery of images featuring winners and placegetters from most of the classes, plus a few. These images and more from SI3DE (when they are loaded over the next day or so) can be purchased from Jane Thompson’s website.

Eventing Hawkes Bay Northern Hawkes Bay Horse Trials, Flaxmere

Jock Paget is back winning in New Zealand again, taking out the CNC2* plus class at Flaxmere on Angus Blue. Their score of 30.7 left them in second place behind Samantha Felton on Ricker Ridge Pico Boo after dressage, but Sam incurred more time faults than Jock on the cross country so finished up behind him in the final placings. Sam was also third on Ricker Ridge Rui with Campbell Draper fourth on Mr Mancini.  Sam also won the Livamol CNC1* Restricted on Ricker Ridge Mystery Man and was second in the Livamol CNC1* on Luminous. That class was won by My Tom Tom ridden by Abigail Long.

The Horse & Groom Equine Jobs CNC2* was won by dressage leader Louise Mulholland on Mr McTaggart, and Louise also won the BetaVet CNC105 on Sandros Salute MW.  Bryce Newman had a good time in the CNC2*, placing second and fourth on Bates Our Entourage and Bates Game Keeper. Holly Morrell was third on Pampero.

There was another Newman winning in the Forbes & Co CNC105 under 21, this time it was Bryce’s son, Jack riding Kakaho Skyline.

Burnham Market International

Oliver Townsend is the King of Burnham Market, having won the 3* there for more years than he may like to remember (this was his tenth win)! He has gone out and won it again this year, on the same horse he won on last year, Cooley Master Class. Piggy French was second on Vanir Camera with Andrew Nicholson third on Byrnesgrove First Diamond. Andrew had led after dressage but had 8.4 time faults which dropped him down the leader board.

Caroline Powell had a busy and good outing. She was ninth on Sinatra Frank Baby in the CIC3*, second in the Intermediate on Chance Encounter VII, second on Halaraafa in a Novice class, third on Shepherds Watch and fourth on Delaney Star in the Open Novice, and sixth on Stracathro Solitary Mistral in another Novice class.

Blyth Tait was sixth on Darius IV in the CCI2*, that class was won by Sarah Cohen on Treason. Tim Price was second in an Open Intermediate on Cooley Showtime. Sir Mark had Leonidas out for a run in that class, finishing 13th after taking their time on the cross country. Tim also had his Badminton horses out in the Advanced class. Xavier Faer was fifth after a good dressage but 4.4 time faults, and Bango was ninth, incurring 14.8 time faults so obviously in cruise mode. The class was again won by Oliver Townsend on Lanfranco.
