Canterbury Show Jumping Championships

Some good competitions at the Canterbury Championships on a grey and cold day at the National Equestrian Centre, McLeans Island

A gloomy day after a glittering event at Hagley Park last night, but the Hampton Oval provided good footing for some great jumping.

Amateur Series

In the Caledonian Holdings Amateur Rider (sponsored by AHD Equine), it was a win to Helen Ensor and Zactac Picalino. Helen also took out the Canterbury Series win. She headed off Abby Hore and Beaumont Geldolf, who lead the nationwide series at this point and recently won the Amateur of the Year title at HOY.

Only four horses went through to the jump-off and the four women were all really going for the first prize. Helen’s time was narrowly in front of Abby’s, with Georgia Reid on Double J Escape finishing third with a good clear round. Anna Douglass had the fastest time on St Henry, but unfortunately one pesky rail meant they finished fourth. Candace Kingsbury and Miss Serendipity II were fifth, with Georgina Power and Flirtini sixth.

Helen bred the lovely 10-year-old Zactac Picalino and said the mare “should see me through my last years of riding.”

Horse TAM5 1.20

There was a very competitive field in the 1.20 class but it was one of the early starters who took out the win. Georgia Urquhart and Quickstep NZPH couldn’t be headed off with their time of 36.38 in the instant jump-off. Grace O’Sullivan and Cosmopolitan were second, with 37.14 and Candace Kingsbury and Miss Serendipity were third, with 38.14.

Horse TAM5 1.40

Tegan Fitzsimon had this class stitched up from the outset, setting the standard when first to go on Alacazam MH, with a double clear in a time of 45.53. The others tried to beat her but couldn’t do it, then Tegan returned with her second horse, Double J Monarch and repeated the double clear in an even better time of 41.24, taking the quinella.  Susie Hayward and Andretti were third, with Chris Harris and Glenbrooke Archie Bunker fourth.

FMG Young Rider sponsored by Betavet

It was a Ngahiwi-dominated result in the Young Rider class, with Steffi Whittaker winning on Ngahiwi Cruise after the jump-off against Ngahiwi Summer, ridden by Kimberley Bird. There were only the two in the jump-off after many of the riders had unlucky rails in the first round.

Devon van Til and her lovely grey Winterberg won the Pro-Am class, after jumping two beautiful clear rounds. Mary Wakeman and MJ Lubeck were the only other pair clear in the first round but had to settle for second after the jump-off. The fastest four-faulter was Kirsty Sharapoff on Shoot the Breeze, followed by Larissa Srhoy and Rockquest.

Lincoln Uni Junior Rider sponsored by Mainland Coachwork

Grace O’Sullivan with Blastov cleaned up the Junior Rider class, with Florence Tapley on Ngahiwi Call Girl second. Both these young riders attend Lincoln University so it was a good result for them, although their hopes of getting a discount on their fees were dashed. Four had jumped clear in the first round, and Steffi Whittaker was third on Tribute OL, with Courtney Townsend riding Suzy Fog finishing fourth.

Pony TA2 1.20m

The last class of the day in the Goldengrove Arena was won by Tallyho Cleopatra, ridden by Gretchen Anderson. She headed off Tallyho Scoundrel and Grace Manera, who also produced a clear round but with a slower time. Rosa Buist-Brown on Junior Disco was third after having a great time but with one rail. Noah Coutts was fourth on Onisha.
